Projects: Past, Current and Future Learn more here about what we've been doing, and how you can get involved. Through our fundraising efforts we have assisted in the purchase of a van for the city's senior program, helped bring the Northwest Symphony to Burien, planted trees in our city parks, and helped fund new play equipment for several parks. Most recently, we were the recipient of a Starbucks Community Improvement Grant. The cash grant of $35,000 and lots of community helped to bring a new large recreational toy to Mathison Park. What’s Ahead We’ve got lots going on. Next spring we plan on holding a huge plant sale as we’ve done in the past. The money will provide the necessary matching funds needed for a grant the city is applying for. The project will be the newest of Burien’s parks, Jacob Ambaum Park located just north of 136th and Ambaum Blvd. The first phase of improvements will start this year with a new basketball court. In 2007 a “Big Toy” will be installed with our matching funds and sweat equity from volunteers. Come and join us. If you’d like to share plants for the garden sale or would like to help during the sale, please contact Gloria at (206) 241-8142.

| The Arch at Lake Burien School Park Our first project was “The Arch” at the Lake Burien School Park (located at 16th/149th Ave SW). The night our organization was born so was our first project. Years earlier, past council member Vivian Mathews had saved from the wrecking ball the Terra Cotta frieze that once adorned the main entrance to the first elementary school in the Highline area. Friends of Burien Parks member Pam Harper took the lead on the project and enlisted a local architect, a builder, and a variety of suppliers to assist. We sold personalized bricks that are part of the plaza where today Burien’s Concerts in the Park series are held and where the interpretive plaques keep the history of the place alive. |
